The ancient city and walled town together

Famagusta and Salamis Trip Plan: A Day from the Ancient City to the Walled Town

Salamis Ancient City and Famagusta’s Walled City offer two distinct experiences in a single day trip: an extensive coastal archaeological site and centuries of urban history concentrated around Namık Kemal Square. Starting from Kyrenia or your hotel, decide on your walking pace first and plan the short drive between both stops. Explore our Famagusta car rental, North Cyprus car hire and Ercan Airport car rental options.

Your starting point changes the day's demands

If staying in Kyrenia, include the outbound and return journeys in the day's demands. Starting from Famagusta, İskele or elsewhere may let you visit the same stops in a different order. The guide's main flow runs from Salamis to the walled town, but opening hours, weather and your own schedule may change the first stop.

If starting with car collection in Famagusta, review Famagusta delivery and vehicle options; confirm the exact address, dates and any request to return elsewhere when booking.

Check current visiting hours, last admission and open sections before setting off. If exploring Salamis in detail, a few main buildings in the walled town may be enough. If you want a long meal and street exploration in town, choose priority sections in the ancient city. These are two different paces; completing more stops is not the only measure of success.

Start with three sections at Salamis

Salamis, north of Famagusta, is an extensive ancient city whose visible remains go far beyond a single courtyard. The gymnasium, baths and theatre provide a useful starting framework for imagining Roman public life. Choose whichever interests you most without setting a goal of exploring the entire site.

  • Gymnasium: Read the colonnaded arrangement and open space together; do not focus only on one photograph spot.
  • Baths: Compare the spaces' different functions and traces of the heating system with the information panels.
  • Theatre: Consider the scale of shared urban life through the relationship between seating and stage.

Exploring an archaeological site involves outdoor walking over variable surfaces. Bring water, suitable footwear and protection for the weather. If using a pushchair, walking stick or wheelchair, ask beforehand about access to specific sections; one accessibility judgement for the whole site would be inappropriate. As tiredness increases, finish your main visit instead of heading to another distant ruin.

Base your walled-town visit around Namık Kemal Square

When moving from Salamis to the town, separate the car journey from walking. After choosing authorised parking, you can connect Namık Kemal Square and surrounding streets on foot. Check parking entry, payment and exit arrangements on arrival; do not expect to reach every point in a historic square by car.

The square's prominent building is Lala Mustafa Pasha Mosque. Built in the Lusignan period as St Nicholas Cathedral, it is notable for its Gothic architecture and was later converted into a mosque. Viewing the façade and entering a place of worship are different visits; follow its current use and staff instructions inside.

Opposite, the remains of the Venetian Palace, particularly its three-arched façade, reveal another architectural layer. A meal or coffee around the square lets you consider both buildings without rushing. If adding the Namık Kemal Museum, check its opening days separately.

How does closure information affect the route?

Checked on 10 October 2026: The Department of Antiquities and Museums table shows Othello Castle and Canbulat Museum closed for restoration. Therefore, do not make Othello a compulsory stop as though its interior were open. For your travel dates, check the official visiting table again.

You do not have to replace a closed monument with another museum. A walk through the walled town, viewing façades and a meal break can complete the day. Assess potentially open options such as the Namık Kemal Museum according to weekdays and holidays; not all institutions follow Salamis's schedule.

Choose between a light and a comprehensive day

Two programmes according to walking demands
OptionSalamisWalled town
A light dayOne or two priority sections; a short visit according to rest needs. The square, two main façades and a seated meal break.
A comprehensive dayGymnasium, baths and theatre; extra areas only if energy and conditions allow. The square, streets and one additional visit confirmed open that day.

Leave a return allowance in both plans. If adding a swim, Varosha or another visit, treat it as a separate decision that changes the day's duration; research access and visiting conditions separately. Karpaz is not a compulsory continuation of this day. Instead of trying to reach the peninsula after Salamis and the walled town, consider allocating a separate day or overnight stay.

Frequently asked questions

Can Salamis and Famagusta be visited on the same day?

They can be combined by selecting priorities. Choose a light or comprehensive pace rather than making the whole ancient city, every walled-town monument and a long meal compulsory in one day.

Must I start from Kyrenia?

No. The route can be followed from other accommodation locations too. Your starting point, visiting hours and return demands affect stop order.

Is Othello Castle open?

The official table checked on 10 October 2026 lists it as closed for restoration. Recheck your travel dates with the Department of Antiquities and Museums.
