Kyrenia to Karpaz: Day Trip and Two-Day Route

Karpaz can be visited in a day from Kyrenia; allow a total of 5–6 hours on the road if travelling as far as the monastery. Choose stops according to your swimming, culture and break priorities. Consider an overnight stay for a long beach break and a more relaxed pace.

01 / Roads and time

How far is Kyrenia from Karpaz, and how long does it take?

Karpaz is not a single destination. Driving to Dipkarpaz village centre is not the same journey as continuing to Golden Beach and Apostolos Andreas. The route provider's records from central Kyrenia show Dipkarpaz at approximately 110 kmand the monastery at approximately 135 km . Your own hotel and chosen coastal route may change this measurement.

Distances are rounded route records. The time column is a suggested driving allowance for planning the trip.

Kyrenia–Dipkarpaz, Kyrenia–monastery and Dipkarpaz–monastery records do not form one route measured through all the coastal waypoints below. If your map shows a longer time, base the plan on that longer duration; add meals, visits, parking and rest separately.

If you prefer the coastal route, review the direction Kyrenia → towards Esentepe → Tatlısu/Kaplıca corridor → Yenierenköy → Dipkarpaz . Continue from there towards Golden Beach and the monastery. Open the coastal direction with its waypoints on the map. Set your own hotel as the start; if waypoints add detours into village centres, use them only to check direction. Do not treat every navigation shortcut as beach access.

02 / Your preferred pace

A day trip or one overnight stay?

You can allocate a full day starting early for short village, monastery and coastal visits. If you want several hours at Golden Beach or frequent breaks, focus on one main stop. An overnight stay splits the long journey over two days; the second day's return still needs planning.

Choose a day trip

  • You can leave early in the morning.
  • You have one main priority.
  • You want to return to Kyrenia in the evening.
  • You are willing to drop a stop if delayed.

Allow one night

  • You want longer at Golden Beach.
  • Children or other passengers need frequent breaks.
  • You can spread driving and visits over two days.
  • Your accommodation budget and return day allow it.

Build your Karpaz trip plan

Do not squeeze a Karpaz trip into a day when you must catch a flight or return the car at a fixed time. When the journey takes longer, change your visit list, not your speed.

03 / Three different stops

What can you do at Dipkarpaz, Golden Beach and Apostolos Andreas?

Dipkarpaz: village and practical break

Make the village centre your first rest point. Combine breakfast or lunch, buying water and a short walk here. Plan 20–30 minutesfor a short break, or 60–90 minutes for a seated meal and walk. Before setting off, check that the place you intend to use is open that day. Open Dipkarpaz centre on the map.

Altınkum: natural coast and swimming

At Altınkum, also called Golden Beach, aim for 30–45 minutesfor a short view or walking break, or about 2 hours or more for swimming and rest. Prepare water and food; do not assume shade, toilets or showers will be available. Official tourism information describes Golden Beach as a natural, undeveloped coast; check current facilities at your chosen access point separately. Open Golden Beach on the map.

Swimming plans depend on conditions. Check the weather and coastal warnings; if unsure about sea conditions, replace swimming with a coastal visit. If you need a lifeguard, designated swimming area or step-free access, confirm these at the chosen point beforehand.

Apostolos Andreas: history and worship

The monastery is a pilgrimage and worship site near the tip of the peninsula. UNDP's restoration recorddistinguishes the church dating from 1867 from the older chapel. 30–45 minutes is a starting allowance; parking, walking and visitor numbers may add time. Check which areas are open and follow clothing and photography guidance on site. Open the monastery location on the map.

A Karpaz day-trip plan from Kyrenia

The times below are an example for a group leaving central Kyrenia at 07:30 and reaching Dipkarpaz by around 10:00. They do not include a long swim. Shorten the programme for a hotel further west, road delays or frequent breaks. On dates with an earlier sunset, bring your arrival target forward too.

These are suggested allocations for travel and visits, not business opening hours.
TimeProgrammeHow to use the time
07:30Leave central Kyrenia.Fuel, water and food prepared beforehand.
By 10:00Arrive in Dipkarpaz.Allow 2–2.5 hours for driving; an earlier arrival adds flexibility.
10:00–10:20A short practical and breakfast break.A short break instead of a long seated meal.
10:20–11:10Drive to the monastery and settle into suitable parking.Do not rush the final section; if delayed, shorten the visit list.
11:10–11:50Visit Apostolos Andreas.About 40 minutes.
11:50–12:15Return towards Golden Beach and reach the access point.Allow walking time from a suitable point; shorten the break if access takes longer.
12:15–13:00A short coastal walk and food break.Do not add a long swimming programme.
13:00Start the return to Kyrenia.Target arrival around 16:00–16:30 including driving and rest; check with a current map.

A full day prioritising the sea: Go from Dipkarpaz to Golden Beach and omit the monastery. Adjust a target of about two hours on the coast to that day's return journey time. This choice cannot be followed simultaneously with the three-stop timetable above.

A short day: Drop the monastery first. If there is enough time for return driving and rest, add a short coastal break to Dipkarpaz; otherwise return from the village or choose an outing closer to Kyrenia. Do not continue to the peninsula's tip simply because it was previously planned.

The 10:30 check: If you have still not left Dipkarpaz, stop trying to complete all three stops. Drop the monastery if the sea is your priority, or the coast if culture is your priority. If even the remaining main visit cannot fit your return target, postpone it that day.

05 / One night, two days

A more relaxed route for families and a long beach break

This example assumes accommodation in Dipkarpaz or nearby . If staying around Yenierenköy, calculate extra return driving to the eastern stops. “Karpaz” in a hotel's name does not mean it is close to Golden Beach; open its exact address on the map.

Day 1 · Village and settling in

  1. 09:00: Leave Kyrenia; take rest breaks as needed.
  2. Around 11:30–13:00: Plan a meal and short walk in Dipkarpaz.
  3. Afternoon: Leave your belongings according to check-in time. Choose a short local walk or rest.
  4. Evening: Clarify the next day's water, food, check-out and luggage arrangements.

Day 2 · One main experience

  1. Around 08:30: Leave the Dipkarpaz area.
  2. Culture or three short stops: Visit the monastery in the morning; if time remains, take a 30–45-minute break at Golden Beach.
  3. Sea priority: About 2–3 hours at Golden Beach; omit the monastery.
  4. Target 12:30–13:00: Finish luggage and check-out arrangements and begin returning to Kyrenia. Add a rest allowance to the current driving time.

If you must return early on the second day, check whether the main visit actually fits into day one. If check-in, children's rest and longer driving leave no room, an overnight stay does not automatically make every stop possible. Keep day two short; change the visit target or trip duration.

If leaving belongings at the hotel, check whether this is accepted and when to collect them. Preparing luggage on the first night reduces the need to pack again on the return morning.

06 / Priorities and season

Which stops should you drop?

Keep one main aim as conditions change.

Sea priorityEnough time at Golden Beach. The monastery and extra village detours.
Culture priorityDipkarpaz and Apostolos Andreas.A long swim; if necessary, the entire coastal break.
A short day or late departureThe return target and one main stop. The distant tip and extra stops; the Karpaz plan itself if even driving time will not fit.

Calculating the return: First decide when you want to arrive in Kyrenia. Subtract current navigation time from the last stop, rest and any hotel luggage collection. The result is your target departure time from the last stop.

If you want to return in daylight, plan arrival before that day's sunset with an additional allowance. This guide's example preference is arrival at least 45 minutes beforehand; it is not a guarantee of safe driving. Poor weather and fatigue may require an earlier return. Long summer days do not oblige you to stay on an unshaded coast in midday heat either.

Do not add Kantara Castle, Salamis and Famagusta's walled town to this three-stop day. Each takes driving and visiting time from the same daily allowance. A separate day for Famagusta and Salamis is more useful than rushing through more places.

07 / Car and road

What should you consider when driving a rental car to Karpaz?

First resolve passengers, child seats and luggage . A two-person day trip and an overnight stay for six with suitcases have different needs. You do not need a large SUV just because you are going to Karpaz; assess passenger layout together with the uses permitted by the rental agreement. Read the car-selection guide for families and luggage.

  • Distinguish roads from coastal access: Do not follow every navigation shortcut. Do not drive down to the beach across sand, fields or rough ground; walk from suitable, permitted parking. A large vehicle does not automatically authorise this use.
  • Do not rush the final section: Visibility, animals on the road and parking manoeuvres determine your speed. A short distance remaining does not mean you can continue at the same speed.
  • Prepare fuel: Set off with enough for the planned return journey and detours. Do not wait for the warning light before looking for a station.
  • Consider the return driver: Leave time to rest after sun, swimming and a long day. If someone else will drive, confirm their eligibility and rental registration beforehand.

Karpaz tourism information highlights free-roaming donkeys and wildlife. Do not hold out food to draw animals to the vehicle or stop suddenly in the road for photographs. Follow nest markers and access directions on the coast, and take your rubbish away. SPOT's work in Karpaz has monitored turtle nesting areas on the northern and southern coasts.

08 / Before setting off

Preparation and budgeting for your Karpaz day

Trip budget = allocated rental cost + fuel + meals + any parking/admission + accommodation. The car's total rental period and delivery terms may differ from the share allocated to your Karpaz day. Compare prices for the whole rental.

Fuel example: Assume a 280 km plan including detours and average consumption of 6 litres/100 km: 280 × 6 ÷ 100 = 16.8 litres. Multiply this by the fuel price per litre on your travel day. Replace the example consumption with your vehicle's actual figure.

  • Water for every passenger; easy food, personal medication and sun protection.
  • For swimming: towels, spare clothing and a wet-items bag; footwear suitable for walking.
  • A charged phone, charging cable and offline map; saved hotel and return addresses.
  • Fuel and visible tyre condition; the rental assistance number.
  • Departure time, one main priority and the time to start returning.

If a particular restaurant, facility, accessible route or visiting area is essential, check its opening day, hours, access and any charge beforehand. Especially at Golden Beach, prepare a backup plan for water, food, shade and toilets.

Once your trip format is settled, add passenger numbers, child seats and suitcases to discuss your vehicle needs with ERM. Your accommodation choice may change the amount of belongings carried in the same car.

Short answers

Frequently asked questions

Can Karpaz be visited as a day trip from Kyrenia?

Yes, with an early start and short visits. Allow a total of 5–6 hours on the road for a plan reaching the monastery; meals, parking and visits are additional. For a long swim or frequent breaks, choose one main stop or stay overnight.

How many kilometres and hours is Kyrenia from Karpaz?

The route provider's records from central Kyrenia show about 110 km to Dipkarpaz and 135 km to Apostolos Andreas. Suggested driving allowances are 2–2.5 and 2.5–3 hours respectively. Recheck the map for your hotel and chosen coastal waypoints.

Can Golden Beach and Apostolos Andreas be seen on the same day?

Yes, with short visits. The three-stop example goes to the monastery first and leaves Golden Beach for the return. If you want several hours by the sea, omit the monastery or spread the trip over two days.

Should we go to Karpaz if leaving Kyrenia late?

First calculate return driving, rest and your arrival target in Kyrenia together. If the remaining time cannot accommodate a visit, choose somewhere closer. If sufficient, limit yourself to one main stop; do not speed up to rescue the day.

Does Golden Beach have facilities, lifeguards and easy access?

Do not assume these are available along the whole coast. Check the chosen access point's current facilities, toilets, shade, swimming area and walk from parking beforehand. Especially with children or limited mobility, do not choose that point without confirming essential facilities.

Do I definitely need an SUV or 4×4 for Karpaz?

This guide does not recommend an off-road route. Vehicle type depends on passengers, luggage and permitted use. A large vehicle does not authorise driving onto sand or rough ground; walk from suitable coastal parking.

How many days should we allow for Karpaz with children?

If frequent breaks and long driving would be demanding, one night and two days may be more relaxed. Allocate day one to driving, the village and settling in, and day two to one main experience. If returning early on day two, do not try to fit every stop automatically.

Should I visit Salamis, Famagusta and Karpaz on the same day?

Do not add them to this guide's Karpaz programme. Travel between areas and visits compress the day. Plan a separate day for Famagusta and Salamis.
