A separate city day from Kyrenia

A Day Trip from Kyrenia to Nicosia: The Walled City, Büyük Han and the Return

Divide your day trip from Kyrenia to Nicosia into two parts: the drive through the mountain pass and a walking route inside the Nicosia Walled City. Focusing on Büyük Han, Selimiye Mosque and Arasta Street lets you enjoy the historic centre at a relaxed pace. Explore our Nicosia car rental and Kyrenia car hire fleet, or combine your route with our 2 and 3-day Kyrenia itinerary.

Choose the day's main focus before setting off

Seeing inns and the market area, visiting museums and shopping require different amounts of time within a day. Choose one main aim first. If architecture interests you, compare Büyük Han with nearby buildings; if local products and workshops appeal, leave time for shops. If a museum is your priority, check the visiting day in the official table and build other stops around it.

Do not assume all museums are open, especially on weekends or public holidays. The Department of Antiquities and Museums table checked on 10 October 2026 lists weekend and holiday closures for various museums in northern Nicosia. Businesses in inns or markets do not keep the same schedule as museums.

Separate arrival by car from the start of your walk

First identify your visiting destination on the map, then a legal parking option. Navigating to a historic building does not mean you can drive to its door or leave the car there. Road signs, local arrangements and parking conditions govern on arrival; do not automatically include narrow streets in your driving route.

Save where you park and design your walk to return there. Check parking duration, payment and exit arrangements. If someone in the group prefers less walking, choose a meeting point and use several shorter sections if needed. If using public transport or a transfer, confirm the last return option before setting off.

What should you look at in Büyük Han?

Büyük Han is an Ottoman caravanserai built for travellers and merchants. Its two-storey arrangement around the courtyard and the small mosque in the centre define its character. Rather than only photographing the façade, read from the courtyard how this arrangement once combined accommodation, storage and trade.

Official tourism information also highlights today's art workshops and galleries. Seeing the building as an architectural stop and spending time in shops and workshops therefore involve different visiting paces. Ask permission before photographing handmade work, exhibitions or shop interiors. If going upstairs or inside matters to you, ask on site about access and current use.

Nearby Kumarcılar Hanı can be compared as a smaller Ottoman urban inn. If adding this second inn, look at the same relationship between courtyard, floors and rooms; do not expect every building to have the same number of open sections or businesses.

Expand your walled-city day according to your interests

Three options after the Büyük Han area
Your interestHow can you expand the day?
ArchitectureA short walk among nearby inns and market streets, focusing on façades and courtyard arrangements.
MuseumsChoose Dervish Pasha, the Mevlevi Museum or another suitable museum according to opening days and admission conditions.
Local products and a breakSpend time in shops and eating around the market; arrange your return with purchases to carry in mind.

Do not treat all three as compulsory stops. For a short day, Büyük Han, a local walk and a meal provide a sufficient framework. If heat, rain or group fatigue increases, a seated break instead of an extra museum is a natural part of the plan too.

Keep the return and route boundaries clear

Consider your return allowance to Kyrenia alongside dinner or other appointments. Rather than trying to finish every stop before closing, decide on the final extra visit according to conditions that day. If it is your flight day, calculate airport obligations separately from this city outing.

This route covers the northern walled city. Crossing on foot or taking a rental car to another area is not automatically included; identity documents, crossing rules and contract conditions need separate assessment. If beginning to drive here, use the first rental and left-hand traffic guideand, for allocating days, the two- or three-day holiday plan .
