Which Kyrenia plans need a car?
You can plan a short central holiday without renting a car. Kyrenia Castle, the Old Harbour and nearby shopping streets form a compact sightseeing area. If your accommodation has a suitable walking route there and airport transport is ready, you can spend your central day walking and taking breaks. [2]
- Car-free plan: Walking in the centre or staying mainly at the hotel, with airport and evening returns arranged in advance.
- Mixed plan: Some days at the hotel and centre, others exploring farther afield. Compare additional excursion transport separately.
- Car-based plan: Travelling between different addresses over several days, moving with luggage or needing independent timings.
First ask your hotel whether airport transfers, town shuttles and transport for your planned tour are included in the package. An airport transfer does not mean local transport throughout your holiday is covered too. A service covering only arrival, specific times or a particular meeting point can change your decision.
Do not assess walking by kilometres alone. Consider luggage, pushchairs, limited mobility, slopes, pavements and weather together. Do not automatically treat a hotel that looks close on a map as an easy walk to the centre.
Compare car needs by accommodation area
“Kyrenia” in a hotel listing does not mean the castle and harbour are walkable. Use the hotel's actual entrance as your starting point and that day's exact destination as the endpoint.
| Accommodation / plan | Check for a car-free option | When does a rental car make sense? |
|---|---|---|
| Central accommodation near the castle and Old Harbour | Central walking routes and pre-arranged airport transport. | For trips outside the centre, frequent hotel returns during the day or walking difficulties. |
| A hotel-focused holiday with transfers included | Separate included transfers from days going out. | If several independent excursions are planned; renting every day may be unnecessary. |
| Staying in Alsancak or Lapta | Check links to beaches, restaurants and the centre using the actual hotel address. | For frequent central journeys or multiple stops in one day. |
| Staying in Çatalköy or Esentepe | Decide whether your days will be around your accommodation or in central Kyrenia. | If going to different areas every day; do not treat these two areas as equally far from the centre. |
| Visiting Bellapais or staying on the hillside | Plan outward and return transport separately. | If hilly routes, evening returns and several sightseeing stops are part of the programme. |
Bellapais lies on the mountain slopes south of Kyrenia. Consider transport separately when adding it to a central visit; do not plan it as a natural continuation of the harbour walk. [3]
For minibuses or shared taxis, confirm the boarding point, the final leg from your stop to the hotel and return-time services with the operator or your accommodation.
If you have not chosen your accommodation yet, the where-to-stay-in-Kyrenia guide explains the areas in detail. On this page, assess how your chosen address affects car needs.

Day-by-day transport: a four-day example
This four-day example for two centrally based passengers with airport transfers included shows which journeys still need a solution.
| Day | Confirmed journey | Existing solution | Car decision |
|---|---|---|---|
| Day 1 · Arrival | Ercan → central hotel | Hotel transfer included and confirmed. | No separate car is needed for this journey. |
| Day 2 · Centre | Castle, harbour and shopping streets; back to the same hotel | The walking route and personal needs are compatible. | The day can be planned on foot. |
| Day 3 · Excursion | Hotel to Bellapais and back | No transport already included. | Compare a return transport quote with the actual rental total for this outing. |
| Day 4 · Departure | Hotel → Ercan | Return transfer included and confirmed. | Confirm luggage, hotel check-out and meeting time. |
In this example, the unresolved need is one sightseeing day. But do not assume you will pay for only one rental day. Your possible collection/return dates and times, the model's minimum period and any delivery charge are established next.
In your own schedule, write these four details for every day: starting address → stops → return address → return time. If adding two different areas to one day, record the journey between them as well as the outward trip. Grouping stops in the same direction can reduce backtracking.
To plan your central day in detail, use the one-day Kyrenia itinerary . If airport transfers are not yet confirmed, add those journeys to your schedule as transport still to arrange.
Calculate sightseeing days and rental period separately
The number of days you use the car may differ from the charged rental period. When requesting a quote, provide collection and return times as well as the start and end dates. Check the minimum period, late-return conditions and handover point together.
For example, ERM's Honda Fit (Jazz) 2023 page stated a three-day minimum when checked on 12 October 2026. Do not generalise this to every car and date; use the current terms on your chosen model's booking screen. [5]
Comparison for a Bellapais outing: First obtain transport quotes covering departure from and return to the same hotel. Then calculate the total for the rental period you can actually buy for the same passengers, including fuel and parking. If you will use the car on other days during that period, include those journeys in the comparison too.
Can you collect a car midway through your holiday?
If delivery dates and model conditions allow, you do not have to start the whole holiday with airport collection. ERM offers free delivery to hotels, homes and accommodation in central Kyrenia; address and time are coordinated when booking. Ask separately about coverage and any charge outside the centre. [4]
Find the required details in the hotel car delivery guide . Also confirm in advance suitable hotel parking and return meeting arrangements.
Compare taxis, transfers and rental cars using the same total
Comparing a daily car rate with a one-way shuttle ticket can lead to the wrong conclusion. First use the same dates, passengers, luggage and final addresses, then compare transport totals for the whole trip.
| Option | Add to the total | Ask before requesting a quote |
|---|---|---|
| KIBHAS + local transport | Arrival and departure tickets for all passengers + transport between the stop and hotel + journeys away from the hotel. | Applicable ticket conditions for each passenger, stops, services and reaching the final address. |
| Hotel transfer + taxis as needed | Transfers not included in the package + all excursion return journeys + any waiting or extra-stop charges. | Is the quote per person or per vehicle, and are the return, luggage and waiting included? |
| Rental car | Total rental for the applicable minimum period + fuel + parking + chosen extras + any collection/return charges. | Dates and times, driver requirements, insurance coverage, excess and return arrangements. |
Example with four fare-paying passengers: If everyone takes the shuttle to and from the airport, count eight passenger tickets in total. If a private transfer quote is per vehicle, do not multiply it by four again; ensure its passenger and luggage capacity suits the group. Do not add a transfer already included in the hotel package a second time.
KIBHAS lists Kyrenia in its airport shuttle network. Check current routes, stops and fares on its official website or app. Do not assume an airport shuttle ticket includes the journey from your stop to your accommodation. [1]
A refundable deposit is not normally a spent transport cost, but it affects your available budget. An insurance excess is not a definite payment either. Note any deposit and damage liability separately from total travel expenses.
If prices are close, consider your willingness to deal with parking, children's breaks, luggage and waiting for a vehicle for every journey. For detailed quote checks, the car rental price comparison guide can help.
Plan parking, your first drive and evening returns in advance
Where will you leave the car during a central visit?
If driving into the centre, choose a car park entrance in advance and include the remaining walk. Ask your hotel about parking location, charges and access arrangements. Rather than finding parking for every short stop, you can explore on foot from one parking point if it suits your needs. Do not assume a space will be available or that hotel parking is free.
Is the driver ready?
Traffic drives on the left in Northern Cyprus. For a first-time driver in this system, price alone is not enough to decide; consider travel fatigue, night arrival and driving confidence too. [6] For details, see the left-side traffic and first-drive guide.
ERM's basic rental conditions are at least 24 years of age and a valid licence held for at least three years; some vehicle groups may have extra requirements. Before collection, confirm that everyone who will drive meets the contract conditions. [4]
How will you get back after an evening out?
Leave the car parked for an evening involving alcohol; arrange a taxi, hotel transport, a suitable walking route or a sober driver named on the contract in advance. Renting during the day does not require using the car in the evening too.
When travelling with children, check child seats and space for suitcases and pushchairs in both rental cars and transfers. Include any need to return to the hotel during the day in your actual journey count.
