Which suits your day?
| Stop | Character of the visit | Planning decision |
|---|---|---|
| Bellapais | Abbey, architecture, village surroundings and a break. | Add it after exploring the centre if you still have energy. |
| St. Hilarion | Steps, rising castle sections and views. | Allow separate time and energy for walking; you do not have to visit every section. |
With children and a pushchair
Do not assume either site is entirely step-free. Ask at the entrance which sections you can access. Bring water, sun protection and comfortable shoes. Choose a short route that makes returning easier if your child gets tired.
If you are carrying a pushchair and suitcases together in the car, use the family and luggage guide's preparation checklist.
Check last admission before setting off
For 1 April–31 October 2026, the official timetable lists Bellapais as 08:00–19:00, last admission 18:00; and St. Hilarion as 09:00–18:30, last admission 17:30. Do not assume these hours apply in another season.

Consider finding parking and walking to the entrance separately from your visiting time. The arrival time on the map is not the time you will buy a ticket and begin your visit.
How should you connect the stops?
If arriving from central Kyrenia, first explore the castle and harbour and decide during your meal break whether to continue to Bellapais. If adding St. Hilarion, do not start late and do not make every stop compulsory.
Map links show the visitor attraction, not a verified car park entrance.
If you are considering hiring a car for this trip, explore collection and vehicle options in Kyrenia and provide your accommodation address, dates and passenger numbers together.
Combine Bellapais Abbey with a village visit
Bellapais is associated with the abbey in the village also known as Beylerbeyi. Its Gothic arches, cloistered courtyard and refectory offer a more detailed visit than photographs taken from a distance. The building's main sections took shape in the Middle Ages; in the open areas, look first at the overall architecture, then at the craftsmanship and relationship between the courtyard and enclosed halls. The official tourism page describes the abbey's history and architecture.
If you want a break in the village, allow one seated rest before or after your visit. Abbey admission, walking around the village and restaurant reservations are separate decisions; the timing of one does not guarantee another. Save the point where you left your car and keep entrances to private homes clear in the village streets. For a short outing, the abbey and its immediate surroundings may be enough.
At St. Hilarion, the visit changes as you climb
St. Hilarion is one of the defensive structures in the Kyrenia mountain range. Its sections at different levels reflect both defensive and palace uses over time. The official description explains that the ascent to the upper sections is steep and stepped. Reaching the castle on the map therefore does not mean the difficult part is over; the main walk begins after you leave the car.
As you climb, remember that you must descend along the same route, rather than thinking only about the next view. Set your own turning point: rest after a chosen section or skip the upper part if your group is tiring. Carry water, choose supportive footwear and use a bag that keeps your hands free on the steps. The castle's official descriptionlets you understand the uphill layout before you visit.
Ozanköy is a separate village stop
Do not use Ozanköy and Bellapais as names for the same place. If you want a second stop focused on food or village life after the abbey surroundings, mark Ozanköy separately on the map. Kyrenia Municipality's molasses festival records show the village's relationship with local produce and culture; the festival is not an event held every day throughout the year.
First choose an open place for food or coffee, then confirm the address and any reservation. If taking a short village walk, identify the route back to your car at the start. If Bellapais is already squeezed into the end of your day, you do not have to add Ozanköy to the same programme. To choose your meal, see the What to eat in Kyrenia guide; if staying to the east, see the daily plan around Çatalköy next.
